OHCHR conducts first human rights training for ASEAN Secretariat

ASEAN Secretariat Training

Staff of the ASEAN Secretariat attended the human rights training in Jakarta, from 12 to 16 December 2011

For the first time, OHCHR Regional Office for South-East Asia conducted two human rights trainings for staff of the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, from 12 to 16 December 2011.

The trainings, organised together with the UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre and the Ateneo Human Rights Centre, sought to give participants a basic grounding in human rights, with sessions on international human rights law, the UN human rights system, and human rights protection at the national and regional level. Special lectures were delivered by a series of eminent experts from both within and outside of the region, including on the themes of migration and human trafficking, the right to development, cultural rights and civil society engagement with ASEAN. The secretariat staff also participated with high energy and enthusiasm in a number of practical exercises, including case studies and a moot court session.

These trainings form part of OHCHR's efforts to support the capacity development of the secretariat staff of ASEAN; staff who will play an important role in helping ASEAN to fulfil its Charter commitments to forge a region of peace, security and sustainable development which promotes and protects the human rights of all the people in the region.
