NEWS RELEASE – Asia and the Pacific regional seminar to spotlight the role development plays in promoting and protecting human rights for all
BANGKOK (9 February 2023) – The final seminar in a series of five regional seminars highlighting the contribution of development to the enjoyment of all human rights – with a particular focus on challenges and successes in Asia and the Pacific – is taking place at the United Nations Office in Bangkok (ESCAP), Thailand from 13 to 14 February 2023. The seminar is being held in hybrid mode and is open to the media.
Key themes of the seminar include:
- the contribution of the development of clean and sustainable technology to the enjoyment of all human rights
- the contribution of development and human rights to the global commitment to leave no one behind
- the contribution of regional development strategies with a focus on concrete policies, practices, and commitments at the regional level
Nada Al-Nashif, United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights will open the seminar, which will include experts and representatives of several governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations.

The Asia and the Pacific Regional Seminar on the Contribution of development to the Enjoyment of all Human Rights for everyone is the final in a series of five global seminars that the UN Human Rights Council has requested the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to organize in order to look at the nexus between development and human rights.

BACKGROUND:
Pursuant to Human Rights Council Resolution 47/11 of 12 July 2021, five regional seminars were mandated to discuss the contribution of development to the enjoyment of all human rights. This seminar series focuses on issues pertaining to international cooperation, commitment to ending poverty, and regional development strategies. Each two-day seminar has two region-specific thematic focuses. This series builds on a one-day intersessional held on 28 May 2021. A report with the conclusions and recommendations of the series will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in September 2023.
