Stories from OHCHR, UNOPS and UNEP

Human rights defenders call for urgent action to “save our homes”

Climate activists in the Pacific explain their work on climate and gender justice, showing the important role of human rights defenders to make everyone’s voices heard, whether for climate change, land rights or women’s rights.

Bringing Positive Change through the Power of Theatre

A travelling theatre group helped remote communities in Nepal come together to talk about gender discrimination, violence and access to justice. Seeing prevalent human rights violations, such as child marriage and domestic violence, and without opportunities for women to make their voices heard and to access security and justice, community members shared a dialogue about the social norms that condone discrimination and violence against women.

Role of human rights defenders in COVID-19 recovery crucial

Human rights and environmental defenders are on the frontline of the struggle for a better future and play a leadership role from the local to the global levels. In a call for better collaboration between defenders, business and governments, various stakeholders shared experiences and discussed how to take action, during the Business and Human Rights Forum. Find out how human right defenders in Cambodia fight for land rights of indigenous peoples, as well as why the work of labour rights activists need to be protected particularly under COVID-19.

The Environmental Rights Initiative

Hear how environmental human rights defenders in China, India and other parts of the world stand up to protect their way of life, the rights to food water, clean air and land, and to a clear and safe environment.
