One more year to investigate and report on human rights in DPRK

UN Special Rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana has one more year to investigate and report on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, after the Human Rights Council adopted a resolution, without a vote, to extended his mandate.

The Human Rights Council urged the DPRK Government to fully cooperate with the Special Rapporteur and his supporting staff by granting them unrestricted access to visit the country and providing all required information.

The mandate of the Special Rapporteur on DPRK was established in 2004 by the then UN Commission on Human Rights, and has been renewed on an annual basis by the Human Rights Council.

The DPRK has not granted access to the Special Rapporteur since the mandate was created, but has recently opened up to dialogue with other UN mechanisms in areas such as the situation of women, children and people with disabilities.

The expert investigates the situation of human rights in the country and on the government's compliance with its obligations under international human rights law. He also submits annual reports to the Human Rights Council and UN General Assembly.

The current Special Rapporteur, Tomas Ojea Quintana (Argentina), was appointed by the Human Rights Council in 2016. Mr. Ojea Quintana, a lawyer with more than 20 years of experience in human rights, worked for the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights, and represented the Argentinian NGO "Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo" in cases concerning child abduction during the military regime.

He is a former Head of OHCHR human rights programme in Bolivia, and served as the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar from 2008 to 2014. As Special Rapporteur, Mr. Ojea Quintana is independent from any government or organisation and serves in his individual capacity.
