Regional Consultation on NHRIs and CSOs' engagement with the international human rights system: Enhancing the protection of human rights on the ground in Asia

The Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific of the United Nations Development Programme and the Regional Office for South East Asia of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights organized a “Regional Consultation on National Human Rights Institutions and Civil Society Organizations’ engagement with the international human rights system: Enhancing the protection of human rights on the ground in Asia” which was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 22 to 23 November 2010.

Specific objectives of the meeting are to:

1. Share experiences and identify opportunities on how to strengthen National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and Civil Society Organizations(CSOs)’ cooperation in using the international human rights system to better promote and protect human rights at the national level, e.g. jointly engaging with Treaty Bodies, the Human Rights Council and Special Procedures mandate holders;

2. Produce recommendations and practical guidance for greater cooperation between CSOs and NHRIs in the use of the international human rights system for enhancing the protection of human rights on the ground, including with support from the UN system;

3. In connection with the The International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC) accreditation process, discuss the engagement of CSOs and NHRIs on the basis of good practices and country examples.

The Regional Consultation brought together representatives of NHRIs and CSOs from 13 countries from Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, S. Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor Leste) as well as representatives of the Asia Pacific Forum (APF) and Asian NGOs Network on National Human Rights Institutions (ANNI) Secretariats.
