South-East Asia Dialogue on Access to Elections for Persons with Disabilities

Date: 1 - 2 February 2012 Location: Jakarta, Indonesia

From 1 to 2 February, the Regional Office participated in the “Regional Dialogue on Access to Elections for Persons with Disabilities” organised in Jakarta, Indonesia. The dialogue was the first major activity of a two-year AGENDA programme funded by USAID, which is seeking to develop the regional network of disability groups in South-East Asia through the sharing of best practices and research.

Workshop for Thai NGOs on effective alternative reporting to the UN Committee against Torture

Date: 21 - 22 January 2012 Location: Bangkok, Thailand

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for South-East Asia in collaboration with the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and with the support from the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office conducted a two-day workshop for Thai NGOs on effective alternative reporting to the UN Committee against Torture in Bangkok on 21 – 22 January 2012.

OHCHR conducts first human rights training for ASEAN Secretariat

Date: 12 - 16 December 2011 Location: Jakarta, Indonesia

For the first time, OHCHR Regional Office for South-East Asia conducted two human rights trainings for staff of the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, from 12 to 16 December 2011. The trainings, organised together with the UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre and the Ateneo Human Rights Centre, sought to give participants a basic grounding in human rights, with sessions on international human rights law, the UN human rights system, and human rights protection at the national and regional level.

Universal Periodic Review Briefing: Preparation for the Second Cycle

Date: 6 - 7 September 2011 Location: Bangkok, Thailand

The OHCHR organised the UPR briefing as a preparation for the second cycle, which took place from 6 to 7 September 2011 in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop was attended by 40 participants from 9 countries, including various ministries, governmental institutions, Regional and National Human Rights Institutions, civil societies, and the UN country team.

Celebrating 20th Anniversary of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families

Ahead of International Migrants Day observed annually on 18 December, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Regional Office for South-East Asia, in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Regional Thematic Working Group (TWG) on International Migration including Human Trafficking, organized a roundtable discussion on Monday, 13 December at the United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok.

Joining Hands to Combat Human Trafficking and Launch OHCHR’s Commentary on the Recommended Principles and Guidelines on Human Rights and Human Trafficking

In honour of International Human Rights Day observed annually on 10 December, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Regional Office for South-East Asia, is organizing an event in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Royal Thai Police and the Anti-Human Trafficking Network of non-governmental organizations, on 16 December 2010 from 9:15 to 12:00 noon to Launch OHCHR’s Commentary on the Recommended Principles and Guidelines on Human Rights and Human Trafficking.

Regional Consultation on NHRIs and CSOs' engagement with the international human rights system: Enhancing the protection of human rights on the ground in Asia

Date: 22 - 23 September 2010 Location: Bangkok, Thailand

From 22 to 23 November 2010, representatives of National Human Rights Institutions(NHRIs) and Civil Society Organizations(CSOs) from 13 countries from Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, S.Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor Leste) will gather in Bangkok to discuss ways to make their collaborative engagement with international human rights mechanisms more effective in order to enhance the protection of human rights in their respective countries.

Regional Dialogue on UN Engagement with the ASEAN Human Rights System

Date: 6 September 2010 Location: Bangkok, Thailand

On 6 September 2010, OHCHR Regional Office for South-East Asia and UNDP Asia Pacific Regional Centre jointly organised a “Regional Dialogue on UN Engagement with the ASEAN Human Rights System” in Bangkok. This was the first occasion that senior UN staff from across the region had come together to consider the emerging ASEAN human rights system and how the UN could engage with and support it at the national and regional level. New opportunities for engagement have been created by references to human rights in the recently adopted ASEAN Charter and the three blueprints for an ASEAN community, and the establishment of two ASEAN human rights bodies over the past year.

UPR Workshop in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar

Workshop on regional human rights arrangements for the Asia-Pacific

Date: 21 - 23 April 2010 Location: Bangkok, Thailand

The “15th Workshop of the Framework on Regional Cooperation for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Asia-Pacific Region” will take place in Bangkok from 21-23rd April 2010 in Bangkok. The workshop is hosted by the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and jointly organised with OHCHR. Government representatives from across the Asia-Pacific will participate in this workshop, together with regional NGOs, National Human Rights Institutions and UN agencies.

Regional HIV/AIDS and Human Rights Workshop for National Human Rights Institutions

Date: 10 - 12 March 2010 Location: Bangkok, Thailand

In order to discuss how to ensure the protection of the human rights of persons living with HIV, OHCHR and the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), with the support of the Asia-Pacific Forum of NHRIs, are organizing a Regional HIV/AIDS and Human Rights Workshop for national human rights institutions (NHRIs) from 10-12 March 2010 in Bangkok. The workshop will bring together NHRIs' staff from different countries in Asia to review the human rights standards and principles that can guide the national HIV response; share experiences and identify opportunities on how HIV can be integrated into NHRIs' programme of work; and strengthen institutional collaboration between NHRIs and other stakeholders in the HIV response.

Human Trafficking - The Human Rights Framework

Date: 18 January 2010 Location: Bangkok, Thailand

The Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially in women and children, Ms. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, spoke at a special session of the Regional Thematic Working Group on International Migration and Human Trafficking entitled, “Human Trafficking: The Human Rights Framework”, held at the United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok on 18 January 2010. The event, co-organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights' (OHCHR) Regional Office for South East Asia, brought together different UN agencies engaged in the issue of migration and trafficking in the Asia-Pacific region.

Second Interactive Regional Dialogue, for SEA, on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Role of the Special Rapporteur

OHCHR through its Regional Office for South-East Asia, in cooperation with UNDP- RCB-Regional Initiative is organizing the Second Interactive Regional Dialogue on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Role of the Special Rapporteur.

Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day 2009 on 10 December will focus on non-discrimination. “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”. These first few famous words of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights established 60 years ago the basic premise of international human rights law. Yet today, the fight against discrimination remains a daily struggle for millions around the globe.

The Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council: Thematic Lecture and Interactive Dialogue with Ms. Asma Jahangir, Chair of the Coordination Committee of Special Procedures

Over the past two years, ROB has been advocating for increased engagement of all actors in the South-East Asia region with the Special Procedures. Following the ROB Workplan 2008-2009, ROB is organizing an activity promoting the work of the Special Procedures, to be held at the United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok. Ms. Asma Jahangir, Chair of the Coordination Committee of Special Procedures is invited as the keynote speaker. ROB counts on the presence of Ms. Jahangir, in the realization of this activity.

Special Rapporteur Mission to Lao PDR

Date: 23 - 30 November 2009 Location: Vientiane, Lao PDR

Ms. Asma Jahangir, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, will officially visit the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, in accordance with her mandate as SR. The Special Rapporteur aims to assess the situation in the country and make relevant and appropriate recommendations, following meetings and consultations with a wide range of Government officials and agencies, religious groups, civil society organizations, academics and other private persons, in regard to freedom of religion or belief.

Second Regional Universal Periodic Review Briefing: Building genuine consultation and an exchange of ideas

Date: 16 - 17 November 2009 Location: Bangkok, Thailand

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a new mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council, represents a unique chance for a State to look at the human rights situation in their country from a broader perspective - looking at the challenges faced, the developments made, as well as a way forward.

Regional Consultation on Mercenaries

Date: 26 - 28 October 2009 Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Representatives of states from Asia, the Pacific and the Middle East will convene on 26 and 27 October in Bangkok at the invitation of the Working Group on the use of mercenaries to discuss current practices of mercenaries and private military and security companies registered, operating or recruiting personnel in the region.

Workshop on the Preparation of the Human Rights Core Document and the Initial Report under the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights by Lao People's Democratic Republic

Date: 13 - 14 October 2009 Location: Vientiane, Lao PDR

From 13 to 14 October the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from Lao PDR and the UNDP-International Law Project in cooperation with the OHCHR Regional Office for South-East Asia held a workshop on the preparation of the country’s human rights core document and the initial report under the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights, following the new harmonized guidelines on treaty reporting. Ms. Virginia Bonoan Dandan, member of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights participated in the workshop.
